Much of Isla Bastimentos and the surrounding reefs and waters are part of a national park. Over 13,000 hectares of land and 11,000 hectares of marine zones are protected. This includes wetlands, mangroves, coral reefs, white sand beaches, and forest habitats. Included in the park are two small uninhabited islands, the Zapatillas, just a short boat ride (or kayak trip) from Casa Cayuco. They offer some of the best opportunities to observe over 200 species of tropical fish in the area.
