Dave, Suzanne & Mina

Owners & Operators

Dave and Suzanne hail from Detroit, Michigan. For years they had wanted to work together doing something fun and unique.  After searching all over for the perfect fit, in 2012 they left their corporate jobs, sold everything they owned and moved to own and operate a small eco-lodge seemingly on the edge of the earth in Bocas del Toro, Panama.  On August 22, 2015 Dave and Suzanne had their first baby and the newest Casa Cayuco family member –  Mina Rose!

Suzanne focuses on the guest experience and day-to-day management of the cleaning staff and kitchen operations. Suzanne and her talented culinary staff prepare all the food served at Casa Cayuco, with a focus on local ingredients including the freshest seafood caught by our on-staff fishermen.

Dave has a passion for all things water. Since living here in Panama, he’s also become borderline obsessed with off-grid infrastructure.  He oversees the captains, guides and and all building projects at Casa Cayuco.   Whether you’re coming for adventure, culture or simply relaxation – Dave and his team will make sure you get what you’re looking for.

Of course, none of this is possible without our amazing staff/family…

Did we say that we would love to have you stay with us?  -Dont be shy, get in touch!

Our Amazing Team

We have fourteen fantastic, hard-working staff members who are indigenous to Panama.  They walk to and from work and all except one live in the village of Salt Creek.   These fourteen employees support more than one hundred people in the village.

In the Beginning

Casa Cayuco had been a dream for owners Tom and Linda Kimbrell since they were cruising the Pacific on their sailboat. They lived in Costa Rica with their young daughter for two years, where they taught at The Country Day School of Costa Rica. When they returned to the United States, they knew that they wanted to create a tropical retreat for adventure minded folks. For years they searched in Central America and the Caribbean to find the best spot. The picturesque beachfront site on Isla Bastimentos captured their imagination and Casa Cayuco was born.

Original Owners of Casa Cayuco

Tom and Linda have dedicated their lives to adventure and education. For 25 years, Tom worked as a professional guide, leading clients on trips to some of the world’s most exotic mountain and ocean locales. Tom has a degree in Geology and holds his USCG Masters license. He holds EMT and WRF certificates, and was held a PADI SCUBA Instructor.  He has worked for several Outward Bound schools as an Instructor and a Program Director.

Linda is a professional educator and has taught in public and private schools for 20 years. With a degree in Environmental Studies and years of experience in outdoor education, she enjoys guiding people in beautiful areas of the world. She has led numerous trips for students, both nationally and internationally.

They are currently pursuing their quasi-retirement outside of Ivins, Utah and Deer Isle, Maine, with an occasional return trip to Casa Cayuco to organize service projects, WFR programs and surf.
